In My Life This Week
I made the difficult decision to close down the less than a month old Home Ed Connection. The site was intended to provide a secure place for homeschoolers to interact online and blog, but with the initial lack of interest I could not justify the high out of pocket cost on my end to keep it running long enough to really get going. I started it on a whim when some home school moms were looking for a way for their kids to interact.
I am happy to say though that I have started up Go Do Learn, something I have wanted to do for a while now. Go Do Learn will serve as a comprehensive listing of field trip locations across the nation, divided by region, state and category, such as Museums, when complete. It is in a soft launch mode now and I plan to launch on the permanent domain sometime in August.
I’m currently looking for writers who want to contribute to the field trip guides for the site. While it is not in my budget to pay at the time, I am offering up linked bylines with each guide as well as ad space on the site in return. Check it out here if you are interested in sharing some of your favorite field trip locations, popular and the obscure.
In Our Home School This Week
Since switching to our more relaxed four day a week schedule that includes just 2 hours of structured work a day (phonics, reading, writing, math, spelling and a tiny bit of other subjects as needed) allowing the rest of the day for child led learning, our week was great!
The kids enjoyed learning again this week, and enjoyed teaching them again. The muddled mess of choosing of curriculum, planning and all of that other garble isn’t stressing me out anymore, we are just going with the flow, and I will purchase new items as the need arises.
Places we are Going and People we are Seeing
We went to Epcot for Mother’s Day for the Flower and Garden festival and had a blast, though I am not enjoying our nasty Florida heat. We have no plans for this next week, but plan to get out as a family next week for the new Pirate’s movie, though I haven’t decided if we will be bringing Little Red (2 ½) along yet.

Home School Questions and Thoughts I Have
Just a quick thought, it is amazing how much better you will feel about how your home education program is going when you take the time to sit down and REALLY evaluate what your educational values and goals are for your kids, not what the government has deemed standard for each grade.

I’ve been reading a lot lately and I really enjoyed “Anarchism and Other Essays” by Emma Goldman. I particularly liked this excerpt from “THE PSYCHOLOGY OF POLITICAL VIOLENCE”as I think the words fit as well in our society today as they did 100 years ago.
“A free Republic! How a myth will maintain itself, how it will continue to deceive, to dupe, and blind even the comparatively intelligent to its monstrous absurdities. A free Republic! And yet within a little over thirty years a small band of parasites have successfully robbed the American people, and trampled upon the fundamental principles, laid down by the fathers of this country, guaranteeing to every man, woman, and child "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." For thirty years they have been increasing their wealth and power at the expense of the vast mass of workers, thereby enlarging the army of the unemployed, the hungry, homeless, and friendless portion of humanity, who are tramping the country from east to west, from north to south, in a vain search for work. For many years the home has been left to the care of the little ones, while the parents are exhausting their life and strength for a mere pittance. For thirty years the sturdy sons of America have been sacrificed on the battlefield of industrial war, and the daughters outraged in corrupt factory surroundings. For long and weary years this process of undermining the nation's health, vigor, and pride, without much protest from the disinherited and oppressed, has been going on. Maddened by success and victory, the money powers of this "free land of ours" became more and more audacious in their heartless, cruel efforts to compete with the rotten and decayed European tyrannies for supremacy of power.
