Hello Fresh provided That Odd Mom with one classic box in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are 100% my own and no monetary compensation was provided.
Love isn't a strong enough word when it comes to my relationship with food. In fact, I have said over and over, if I could have one wish granted, it would be to slowly eat my way around the world Bizarre Foods style. New flavors and foods are as intriguing to me as my favorite comfort foods. My family doesn't always share my passion for food, but for moment, well actually for two days, I saw that little glimmer in their eye after our HelloFresh box was delivered to our door.
I must warn you before you go any further into this post that it is LONG. I had a hard time writing it because I didn't want to write you a novel for a review, but I gave up and shared everything!
PS. The photos are taken with my iPad, which takes not so great pics...a photo blogger I am not!
What is HelloFresh?
HelloFresh is a subscription food delivery service that sends you all of the ingredients you need each week (except for pantry staples like oil, sugar and salt) along with recipes to cook three meals that serve 2 to 4 people. To me it is like having a meal planner and produce co-op packaged up with a grocery delivery service and then bam...yummy food happens.
HelloFresh offers two box choices, classic and veggie. If you choose the classic box you have a choice of 5 meals to pick your three from (make your picks in your account after you order your box), while those with a veggie box do not get a meal choice.
How Much Does it Cost?
The classic box cost $69 for 2 servings or $129 for 4 servings each week while the veggie box cost $59 for 2 servings or $109 for 4 people.
(You can check out the HelloFresh boxes here and use my referral code JA8MJA to get $20 off your first box....but don't go yet, I have more to tell you!)
So basically, you are getting fantastic meals that cost anywhere from about $20 for two people up to $43 for four people. I don't know about where you live, but we cannot eat out here at a restaurant that actually uses fresh ingredients for that price.
As of family of five, the $129 price tag for a week is still pretty pricey for us, just because we don't eat out that often. That is why I adore the fact that HelloFresh allows you to pause your order and pick the boxes you want. A once a month order for our family is a fantastic way to try out new recipes without taking a huge hunk out of our grocery budget.
Check Out Our HelloFresh Box
We received our box, packaged up all nice, tight, cold and fresh the week before Thanksgiving. It was perfect timing for me to NOT have to think about what I was going to cook for part of the week since I was doing so much thinking about the upcoming festivities.
Our box included all of the ingredients and recipe cards to make Chicken Polpetti over Penne, Spicy Thai Beef with Coconut Rice and Shrimp and Chorizo Stew with Kale. These were all of the chef selections for the week as I chose not to substitute a meal. They all sounded way to good to swap. If I had though, I could have picked from Garlic Roasted Pork Chops with Fennel and Carrots or Vegetarian: Sweet Potato Quinoa Bowl with Chimichurri.
Meal 1 - The Spicy Thai Beef with Coconut Rice
I made this one for dinner the night the box arrived. Since our box was only for two servings I had salad, soup and sandwiches on hand ready for the kids, but as soon as the aroma started to fill the room, they were not having any of that. Luckily, the serving sizes are generous on this recipe, because all five of us had the meal for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was easy to cook and I was easily able to substitute my virgin coconut oil for the oil called for in the recipe along with a spoonful of honey in place of the sugar. (We have been trying REALLY hard to know out processed foods here!) I will be cooking this recipe again!
Meal 2 - The Chicken Polpetti and the Shrimp and Chorizo Stew
The next day I decided I would cook the other two meals at the same time since two of the kiddos do not like shrimp. The hubs and I could have a tasting menu and the kids could each pick which one they wanted to try. It was easy enough to cook both meals at the same time with a little planning too.
My son devoured the pasta from the polpetti, but didn't care for the meatballs. My oldest daughter liked the meatballs and ate the stew while my youngest daughter loved the whole pasta dish. The hubs and I both tunnel visioned in on the stew and it was AMAZINGLY good! By the times the kids were done with it I never even got a chance to try the polpetti, but the hubs said he wasn't a fan of the meatballs either.
We really were pleased with the quality of all of the ingredients sent to us, which included organics, and the finished meals. I only have a few cons for my family:
- Stock/bouillon cubes are provided for recipes that require a stock base. I'm NOT a fan of the processed cubes at all. I would much prefer an organic liquid stock or broth or to use my own homemade broth.
- I WISH the recipe cards were hole punched and your first box came with a binder to store them in because I will be using them again.

Additional thoughts that I forgot to include in this wonderfully long post!
- The packaging of the box was fantastic too! Keeping the veggies fresh and meat cold was a layer of thick insulated padding along with 3 nice sized ice packs that were still almost completely frozen.
- When you order your credit card or Paypal account will be charged a $1 fee to set up billing. They donate this fee to a charity that feeds the hungry.
