As I write this post, two young girls, 14 and 12, sit waiting for court dates after their bullying caused another 12 year old girl to leap to her death. Not only is one life gone, but countless more will be changed forever because no one stood up and said "That's Not Okay!" It is time to raise our children to be giants that stand up to bullying.
Green Giant has teamed up with PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and We Day Minnesota to help parents Raise A Giant and put a stop to bullying in their community. They are encouraging you, the parent, to have the strength to stand up and speak up for others that think are being bullied.
To start the movement, Green Giant is asking you to write a letter to your child(ren) to encourage them to have the strength to stand up to bullying.
Here is my own letter to my children.
To my children,
I want you to know that you are lucky. Because we homeschool you have yet to experience bullying first hand. You are surrounded by loving friends and family that know that hurting someone else for fun isn't okay. Many other kids are not as lucky as you though. I was one of them.
When I was a child I was constantly made fun of for the birthmark on my face, my slanted eyes, my teeth and so much more. It hurt beyond words. I had to dig deep and find confidence within myself to get past the things that were said to me.
Every child isn't able to do that though. They need someone to stand up for them. They need someone to tell them that they are perfect they way they are. They need someone to stand up to the bullies and say "that is not okay!"
I believe that you have the strength to be that person and hope that if you ever see someone being bullied that you will stand up for them and make sure they know that they are cared for as much as I care for you.
You are my little giants of courage and compassion and I love you every minute of the day for it!
Write Your Own Letter
You can visit RaiseAGiant.com and read other letters parents have written to their children, share them and then write your own. It is up to us to make sure our kids are not being bullied or bullying another child and to teach them how to be a giant.
A donation was made to the PACER Center for Bully Prevention in exchange for me writing this post.
General Mills is also offering up one $25 gift card for one of my readers. Leave a comment below telling me how you are raising your child to be a giant and I will choose the winner randomly on Oct. 31st.
