A Lesson on Heroism, Courage and Bravery Courtesy of Caitlyn Jenner

This week the world was introduced to Caitlyn Jenner. If you haven't seen her first photos, your likely not even reading this post. As the Vanity Fair cover photo flooded the internet I saw equal shares of praise and disgust.

But then something new started filling up my social media feeds.

As I see post after post about Bruce Jenner's transition to a woman, and I hear words like, bravery, heroism, and...

I'll just leave this here for everyone who keeps praising Bruce Jenner for his "bravery".

Heroism . . . Courage . . . Bravery

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
— Inigo Montoya - The Princess Bride

I feel like a little basic word study needs to be done along with a big dose of acceptance.

Hero - a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal
Bravery - brave spirit or conduct; courage; valor.
Courage - the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty,danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.

Do you see anything in these definitions that says only those who put their selves in harms way are heroes, brave or courageous? NO!

Caitlyn Jenner is COURAGEOUS because she has chosen to live the life that makes her happy, regardless of the way society may perceive or treat her.

She is BRAVE because she has allowed her choices to be made public in world filled of ignorance and bigotry. A world that does not easily accept things outside of it's on little comfortable bubble.

She is a hero because she is helping other transgender men and woman to see that is OKAY to be who you really are. Possibly saving one or many that are susceptible to the 41% suicide rate!

To ignore these truths is to ignore the same for so many more, like the gorgeous plus sized models breaking the mold of beauty, the mom who stands strong and doesn't crumble after learning her child has cancer, the woman who hands out food to homeless knowing that it will land her in jail.

None of them have strapped guns around them and marched into enemy territory, but just like Caitlyn Jenner they are heroes, whether you are comfortable with it or not!
