From the DIY craze to the rise of beer and bacon, the food trends that made our red hot list are each very different, but have one thing in common – they’ll get you excited about food. Prep Time: 10 Minutes
Start to Finish: 30 Minutes
- 6 cups Rice Chex® or Chocolate Chex® cereal
- 1 bag (12 oz) white vanilla baking chips (2 cups)
- 1/3 cup coarsely crushed peppermint candy canes (14 miniature, unwrapped)
- Line cookie sheet with foil or waxed paper. Place cereal in large bowl.
- In microwavable bowl, microwave white vanilla baking chips uncovered on High about 1 minute 30 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds, until chips can be stirred smooth. Stir in half the crushed peppermint candy.
- Pour over cereal; toss to evenly coat. Spread mixture in single layer on cookie sheet. Immediately sprinkle with remaining candy. Let stand until set, about 20 minutes. Gently break up coated cereal. Store in airtight container.
Get Back to Great. It feels like everyone has retro fever this year, as swinging ‘60’s style continues to pop up on TVs, radios and runways. And now the old-school new wave is invading our kitchens as well. My favorite pick as a home school mom is of course, “Kids in the Kitchen.” Including kids in the kitchen is always a great way to teach science, math and of course have some great memorable moments with your kids.
The top recipe pick for this Red Hot Holiday Trend is “Reindeer Feed,” a playful take on a fun holiday snack for kids.
Now, we don’t have any Chex® or white vanilla baking chips in our house and I do not usually make a habit of deviating from our weekly shopping plans or budget just to try out a new recipe. Instead, I will do what all good cooks do and improvise.
I will be making this fun treat today with my kids using the following replacement ingredients.
We are only going to make a half a batch by the way.
- 3 cups of Cascadian Farm honey nut o’s
- About a tsp. of melted margarine to lightly coat the cereal (maybe less)
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- And of course, the peppermint candy canes
