8 Weeks to Real Foods with Vintage Remedies: Week One Drinking Habits

Now, the hard part, my experiences with week one, changing our drinking habits.
What was your first reaction to what you would be eliminating for the week?
Honestly, my first reaction was, CRAP! I LOVE coffee, drink way too much in the morning and on top of that drink soda and sweet tea too. The thought of eliminating them kind of freaked me out. It also made me realize that I’m going to tackle this first 8 weeks just trying to change me and then I’ll go through the course again working on the hubby and kids.
What was your first reaction to what you would be adding for the week?
I was relieved that the main focus for the week was on water, I try to drink the right amount every day anyways. The recipes for substitute drinks sounded pretty good too, though I must admit, I did not have the items available in my home to make most of it and had already made my grocery trip for the week.
What was your plan to make the change for the week?
I wasn’t even in my mindset to try to give up the coffee yet, though I did think I would try to back off. I figured I would do my best to drink nothing but water for the rest of the day for the whole week, staying away from my beloved Cherry Coke and sweet tea.
Were you successful in replacing your old items with Real Foods this week?
LOL, NO! So far this week I have failed miserably, though I do have high hopes for today and the rest of the weekend. (I’ll be sure to post an update on this post when it’s all said and done) I managed on Tuesday to drink just my morning coffee, that I limited to 2 ½ cups (versus my normal pot) and then nothing but water the rest of the day. I thought I was getting off on the right track.
Then I went into freak caffeine mode on Wed. and brewed another pot when my 2 ½ cups were gone (what’s left after hubby takes his humongous cup of coffee to work) and drank almost the full pot. I still managed to get all my water in for the day but also snuck in about four five sips of some Cherry Coke later in the day. : X
Yesterday I managed to get by with the smaller amount of coffee again, but after that, it just all went up in smoke. I think I only had half of my daily water and some soda (about a half a can) but I did make an all fruit smoothie to drink using the juice of two navel oranges, one banana and a handful of blackberries. The kids’ icked and ewwweeeed me when I drank that, let me tell you, despite the fact that it was really good. I can just imagine how their transition is going to go in the future.
What were you thoughts at the end on the foods you eliminated and added for the week?
Well, so far, I’ve only cut out milk, fruit juice and sweet tea, and while I really like to drink all three of them, I’ve actually been okay with it. The coffee and soda on the other hand, I just have to say I didn’t realize how MUCH I rely on them each day and have a hard time imagining giving them up all together since I’m failing so miserably at just limiting the amount.
Did the Change affect the way you felt physically or emotionally at the end of the week?
Physically, I feel no different, really how could I though, I’m still pumped up on caffeine and not getting enough water to really be hydrated. Emotionally, I’m beating myself up because I wondering at what point in my life allowed myself to become so dependent on caffeine to get through the day. I’m thinking I need to start working out first thing in the morning again to get me going naturally so I don’t have to rely on the other.
