Sunday Morning in the Garden

I slept in yesterday morning, which would have been wonderful but it meant that I was out in the garden getting work done 10 minutes after getting up before it got to hot. We have a lovely garden planted this year but it was in serious need of thinning out as a weird gourd and the tomatoes were taking over choking everything out.

I spent two hours out there on my beautiful Sunday morning weeding and pulling up some of the mass population of tomato plants while the hubs did the same and redirected the crazy gourd. Even though I finished up at around 11, I was already sweating from the Florida heat and quickly reminded that I need to get off my butt and exercise. All of that squatting down had my legs hurting!

Speaking of the crazy gourd, here it is. Any clue as to what is? We did not plant it and assume it somehow made its way to the garden from the produce that we bring home to feed the pigs.

Besides the crazy gourds and tomatoes, we have lettuce, collard greens, broccoli, okra, beans, peas, potatoes, spinach, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, grapes and many herbs growing this year. The lettuce is taking a beating from the grasshoppers and caterpillars, but other than that, everything is growing well this year.

After we finished cleaning the garden up yesterday, we also harvested some collards, lettuce and green tomatoes. I chopped the lettuce and put in the fridge for salads this week. The collards were chopped, blanched and tossed in the freezer and those delectable little green tomatoes were fried and a part of dinner. Yummy!

Do you have a garden growing this year? How is it doing? Have you got to enjoy any of the spoils yet?
