All About Bugs: A Book List for the Primary Years

My six year old daughter is currently obsessed with bugs, insects, creepy crawlies...whatever you prefer to call them. Beyond helping set up a habit for some caterpillars, they really are not my thing. Since she adores books, I can still help her explore her new found interest (daddy and big brother help with the real life bug fun) by finding a good selection of facts and fiction to share with her.

Literature

James and the Giant Peach was one of our read aloud books this year and beyond enjoying the humor, Ali was constantly asking me questions about the characters. My list here includes seven other books to read aloud that include a cricket, ants, a beetle, a spider, worms and bees.

Poetry

One of Ali's favorite books is a lift the flap poetry book, My Messy Closet. She loves the roach in the aunts broach and all of their other creepy things lurking in the closet. Our copy is very loved and worn so I can't wait to add some more poetry with insects to our collection.

Beginning Readers

Seuss in a favorite in our house as we are learning to read, so I couldn't pass up adding three titles that include bugs along with an easier read from the Step into Reading series.

Science

We have numerous "Let's Read and Find Out" science books, but oddly enough, none about bugs. I'''m actually more excited about getting the BUGS book, with it gorgeous diagrammed drawings of bugs and the Peterson First Guides: Insects, because we use our First Guides: Birds all of the time.

Math

We don't work on formal math here until at least third grade, so finding books that combine bugs and math, a big bonus.

History, Culture & Geography

Bigger bonus, finding books that incorporate bugs with medieval history, prehistoric life, a comparison of country vs. city and the culture of China.

Coloring, Activities and Hands-On Projects

We have a large collection of Dover Coloring Books here. They are favorite of all the kiddos, as they curl up with them while we listen to audio books. Besides adding one about bugs to the collection, I found a book of bug art activities, an I Spy style book and a sticker book. Because sometimes you need something to keep little hands occupied.

Do you have any favorite bug books we should consider adding to our collection?
