Celebrating during the holiday season is different for every family, but what most have in common is a love of food and celebrating local flavors with favorite holiday recipes. Often times our favorite recipes have been passed down through multiple generations and those special ingredients are able to help us create memories that last a lifetime.
This holiday season Winn-Dixie invites you to share your favorite holiday recipes and local flavors by submitting them to the Recipes to Impress eBook. Before I tell you how to join in the fun, I want to share some of my favorite holiday food memories with you, though I’m sad to say that I never got the recipes from my loved ones.
Psssttttt…..I have to warn you first, I’m a dessert freak.
My holiday recipe memories mostly stem back to my granny and local flavors of the south which always left me grinning from ear to ear during the holidays when the, made from scratch, buffet of sweets was put on display. My absolute favorite was the towering red velvet cake with homemade icing. I always made an effort to get the biggest piece I possible could. Then there were pies galore, but the custard always called to me with a sweet serenade saying, “eat me, eat me.” It didn’t stop there though, also waiting to tantalize the taste buds would be fresh loaves of delicious pound cake, banana pudding (the real stuff) with meringue, peach cobbler and ice box cake. Of all of the sweets presented at each holiday gathering it was the icebox cake that always stayed at the top of memories. It was overly sweet gooeyness that was compromised of graham crackers, pecans, mar chino cherries and other tid bits folded in. It was by far an elegant dessert, but something about always seemed “right” to me as a child.Sweets still play a bit part in our holiday traditions, and these days you will find me baking pies, cobblers, cakes and more for my kids in hopes that they can grow older with some of the same fantastic memories that are still dear to my heart.
