Indoor Imaginative Fun with Kids Invention Kits
Chances are you know that kids need to get outside and play everyday. I have no problem getting my kids outside, but sometimes I have a problem getting them to stay in.They don't care if it the current wind chill in 10, they will still head outside for hours and romp around in the woods. For those extra cold or rainy days it is nice to have some fun and imaginative activities tucked away to keep the cabin fever at bay.
Kids Invention kits will not only keep them busy on a dreary day (yay for saving this homeschool mama's sanity,) but they are also a great way seamlessly blend some STEM time into your day without it feeling like school. My kiddos love science and math projects but if I ever tried to turn them into a lesson or made them mandatory I would be prepping myself for the stink-eye and the possibility of sucking the joy out their passions. That's why I love these types of kits. They encourage thoughtful, but still amusing play that allows the kids to learn and explore on their own terms.
ZOOB Inventor's Kit - ages 6 and up
Zoob is an open-ended kit that allows your children to really use their imaginations and since it is for ages 6 and up it can keep a wide age range entertained.
"ZOOB Inventors' Kit exhibits builders and their creativity, boasting the winners from our previous Inventors' Contest and featuring their creations along with the stories behind them. The kit comes with 100 ZOOB pieces to re-create the award winning designs, or to build your own. ZOOB is not like any other building set - the pieces include gears, axels and joints that snap, click, and pop together! With rotating, spinning and extendable parts you can actually design a toy to play with, instead of just building something to look at. Create monsters—or vehicles—or monsters that turn into vehicles!"
Makey Makey - ages 8 and up
If you've got kids that love to game or dissect computers, a Makey Makey kit would be a great choice. You can turn anything (seriously, they turn a banana into a piano) into a keyboard with endless possibilities.
"With Makey Makey in your hand, the world suddenly becomes your brainy playground. Without the use of messy coding or breadboards, use alligator clips to attach to just about anything and build something extraordinary. Our literal jaw dropped to the floor when we realized the possibilities are also literally endless."
littleBits Base Kit - ages 8 and up
littleBits lets your electronic lover, you know that kid that's been trying to take apart every electronic in your home since they could hold a screwdriver, create with over 150,000 circuit combinations.
"Getting started with electronics has never been easier. The Base Kit is perfect for kids and younger makers to begin inventing with electronics in seconds. Bits snap together with magnets, so it’s impossible to make a mistake. Your kids [and you!] can learn the basics of electronics, explore STEAM/STEM principles, form the foundations of critical thinking, or just have fun with blinking, buzzing creations. No soldering, wiring or programming required."
